A physicist, teacher and pioneer of wireless communication. Working in Kronstadt, he studied electromagnetic waves and improved devices for detecting them. In 1895 he publicly demonstrated a receiver also used to register lightning. His experiments formed part of an international development drawing on several researchers. Naming a single inventor of radio oversimplifies this history and obscures the distinction between different technical achievements.
