A writer, playwright and doctor who began by publishing short humorous pieces. His stories and plays explored everyday life, frustrated hopes and constraints on human freedom without offering easy answers. His dramatic writing changed expectations of theatrical action and became part of the international repertoire. Alongside literature he practised medicine and undertook public work, continuing to write in Yalta despite deteriorating health.
