Son of Ivan IV and Anastasia Romanovna; during his reign Boris Godunov gradually assumed a decisive role in government. The Moscow Patriarchate was established in 1589, while the construction of southern fortresses and expansion into Siberia continued. His death without surviving children ended the Moscow royal line of the Rurikids.
