The eldest surviving son of Alexei Mikhailovich inherited the throne in 1676. In 1682 his government abolished mestnichestvo, a system of appointments based on ancestry and the service records of a family's forebears. His death without a surviving heir triggered a struggle between the Miloslavsky and Naryshkin families.
