A writer and playwright who combined Ukrainian folklore and fantasy with satire of society in the Russian Empire. Evenings on a Farm near Dikanka brought him recognition. The Government Inspector, his Petersburg stories and Dead Souls portrayed officials, landowners and urban life. He spent much of his mature career abroad, particularly in Italy; religious reflection and an unfinished continuation of Dead Souls occupied his later years.
