A physiologist who investigated digestion and its nervous regulation. His long-term experiments made it possible to observe organs while preserving much of their normal interaction. He received the 1904 Nobel Prize for research on digestion. Studying responses to signals led him to conditioned-reflex theory, which influenced physiology and psychology. He directed a major scientific school and continued working after the atlas’s 1917 endpoint.
