A writer, editor and historian, Karamzin helped transform the language of Russian prose. Letters of a Russian Traveller and Poor Liza established him as a leading sentimentalist. Alexander I appointed him historiographer in 1803. His multi-volume History of the Russian State brought the country’s past to a broad reading public and strongly influenced nineteenth-century historical imagination. Its final volume appeared after his death.
