The author of War and Peace and Anna Karenina was also a thinker and educator. Service in the Caucasus and the defence of Sevastopol informed his early fiction. At Yasnaya Polyana he taught peasant children. Later he developed a religious and ethical teaching that challenged violence and social inequality. His rejection of violent resistance influenced readers internationally, including Mahatma Gandhi.
