A poet and novelist, Lermontov was a major figure in Russian Romanticism. Death of the Poet, written after Pushkin’s death, made him widely known and led to his transfer to the Caucasus. Experiences there became central to his writing. In A Hero of Our Time, he explored the inner conflicts of contemporary life. His brief literary career ended when he was killed in a duel at Pyatigorsk in 1841.
