A mathematician and one of the founders of non-Euclidean geometry, Lobachevsky developed a system that departed from Euclid’s parallel postulate. He presented its foundations at Kazan University in 1826 and expanded them in subsequent publications. As rector, he strengthened the university’s facilities, teaching and research. His ideas gained broad recognition only later; few contemporaries understood the significance of this new approach during his lifetime.
