A scientist who combined chemistry and physics with work on language, poetry and mosaic art. After studying in Russia and Germany, he joined the St Petersburg Academy of Sciences. With Ivan Shuvalov he helped prepare the plan for Moscow University. His work advanced scientific education and the Russian literary language, while expanding opportunities to teach the natural sciences in Russian.
