The Moscow princely line is associated with Daniel Alexandrovich and his descendants. In the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, the princes of Moscow expanded their territories and strengthened grand-princely authority. The transformation of the principality into a united Russian state was a process, not a single change of name.

Beginning
1263 is the traditional starting point for Daniel's appanage; firm evidence of his independent rule dates from later.
Overlapping periods

Symbols
Ivan III's seal bearing a double-headed eagle is documented in 1497 and is not projected back into the thirteenth century.
