Afanasy Nikitin

A merchant from Tver who wrote A Journey Beyond Three Seas, describing his travels through Persia to India and his return via the Black Sea. He recorded trade, everyday life and religious customs, together with the difficulties of living far from home. His account is a major work of fifteenth-century Russian travel writing. Scholars have proposed different chronologies for the journey.
