A poet, novelist and dramatist, Pushkin played a central role in shaping modern Russian literature. His works include Eugene Onegin, Boris Godunov, lyric poetry and historical prose. Political verse brought exile; after his return, Nicholas I personally supervised censorship of his writing. Pushkin also researched archival records on Peter I and Pugachev’s rebellion. His literary innovations accompanied sustained reflection on history and individual freedom.
