- 1132–1478
The lands of Rus' contained independent principalities, republics and shifting alliances. The atlas gradually shifts its focus from Kiev to Vladimir and Moscow, but this sequence does not imply that the other political centres disappeared.
- Political map
- The lands of Kiev, Chernigov, Polotsk, Galicia–Volhynia, Vladimir–Suzdal and others; the Novgorod Republic.
- 13th–15th centuries
- The Mongol conquest, the dependence of several principalities on the Horde, the expansion of Lithuania and the rise of Moscow changed the political map.
- The 1478 boundary
- The annexation of Novgorod is used as a conventional milestone for the Moscow line. Other lands followed different political histories.
