A Byzantine painter who worked in Novgorod and Moscow. The surviving frescoes in the Church of the Transfiguration on Ilyina Street reveal his expressive, free handling of paint. In 1405 he worked with Andrei Rublev and Prokhor of Gorodets on the earlier Annunciation Cathedral in the Moscow Kremlin. His career connected Byzantine painting with the art of Rus; later icon attributions require caution.
