A poet, translator and philologist, Trediakovsky helped reshape Russian literary language and verse. After studying in France, he worked at the St Petersburg Academy of Sciences. His 1735 treatise proposed new principles of Russian metre, a reform subsequently developed by Lomonosov. He translated European literature and historical works and experimented with poetic forms. His lasting contribution to Russian culture exceeded the mockery that accompanied some contemporary responses.
